Read the drain field diagram from left to right
1. House
Wastewater leaves sinks, toilets, showers, and appliances through the building sewer.
2. Septic tank
Solids settle and float while partially clarified liquid flows toward the outlet.
3. Distribution
An outlet, box, pump, or pressure network sends flow to the designed laterals.
4. Drain field
Perforated pipe or chambers release effluent across trenches or another approved infiltrative surface.
5. Soil
Unsaturated soil provides final absorption and treatment. It is not an open drainage ditch.

What is the difference between a septic tank and a drain field?
The tank separates and stores solids. The drain field receives clarified effluent and distributes it through soil for absorption and treatment.
Does every septic system have a distribution box?
No. Some systems use gravity outlets, pumps, pressure distribution, chambers, or other approved layouts. The local design determines the distribution method.
Can I use this diagram to install a drain field?
No. It is an educational guide. Soil evaluation, setbacks, design flow, reserve area, permits, and professional design are still required.
Where is a drain field usually located?
It is placed in a permitted area with suitable soil and required setbacks. The site plan and local approval control the location, not a generic diagram.
